Indonesia Targets 17.6 Million Foreign Tourists by 2026
Indonesia has embarked on an ambitious plan to attract 17.6 million foreign tourists by 2026, with a focus on sustainable tourism, personal experiences, and technological innovation. The government aims to significantly increase the tourism sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP to 4.7%.
Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, emphasizes that future trends in travel will focus on three key aspects: technological advancements, sustainable tourism, and personalized travel offerings. The goal is to make Indonesia a top-of-mind destination for global travelers.
To achieve this, an international campaign titled “Go Beyond Ordinary” was launched at the World Travel Market in London in 2025. The campaign highlights three main pillars: gastronomic tourism, wellness tourism, and marine travel. The aim is to attract high-quality tourists and affirm Indonesia as a destination offering deep and memorable experiences.
The program also includes initiatives promoting a healthy lifestyle under “Wonderful Indonesia Wellness” and the development of marine tourism focusing on popular locations like Raja Ampat. Meanwhile, gastronomic tourism is promoted through “Wonderful Indonesia Gourmet,” generating international interest in Indonesian cuisine.
Sustainability is a key element, with a focus on cleanliness and preserving culture and nature, including initiatives like the “Clean Tourism Movement” and “Village Tourism” programs supporting local communities.
These tourism development plans are part of a larger National Medium-Term Development Plan for 2025 and a Government Work Plan for 2026, which anticipate a significant boost in domestic travel to 1.18 billion trips.
