New Directions in Indonesian Tourism

On January 20, 2026, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, outlined strategic directions for the country’s tourism sector at a meeting with the Harvard Indonesian Student Association. The event focused on discussing the future of Indonesian tourism, emphasizing sustainable development and community empowerment.

The Minister highlighted Indonesia’s uniqueness as an archipelago with over 17,000 islands and rich biodiversity. Data was presented on the development of tourist villages, with five being globally recognized. Efforts were described to promote 13 main tourist destinations through sustainable practices and local involvement.

The event also touched on economic aspects, highlighting the successes of 2025, with tourist numbers exceeding forecasts. Discussions included improvements in domestic air and sea connectivity and new approaches in visa policy to attract international tourists.

The strategy includes five key programs aimed at enhancing security, developing thematic travel packages, expanding tourism events, applying technological innovations, and fostering the art and design industry.

The Minister also identified challenges facing the sector, such as environmental issues, visa arrangements, and workforce certification. Indonesia aims to position itself as a major player in the global tourism market through strategic coordination and cross-sector collaboration.
