Urgent Revitalization Efforts for 'New Bali'

Recently in Medan, suspected corruption in the Lake Toba development project, part of the ‘New Bali’ initiative, was uncovered. This program, launched during Joko Widodo’s leadership, aims to create five new tourist destinations comparable to Bali. However, implementation faces challenges. Recently, two officials, including a representative from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, were arrested for alleged misconduct in government projects at Lake Toba, resulting in losses of nearly 13 billion rupiah. The rise in tourist numbers to the traditional Indonesian gem—Bali—highlights the importance of diversifying tourist destinations, and local authorities must seriously address this task. Amid preventable tragedies and economic losses, efforts must focus on effective project management and infrastructure development to boost tourism in the new areas.
