Indonesia and BoP: An Uncertain Future

The Board of Peace (BoP), an entity established under Donald Trump, has become a contentious issue in Indonesia. The country’s involvement in BoP, alongside Israel, has sparked concerns about its international commitments and responsibilities. According to Wirya Adiwena, Deputy Director of Amnesty International Indonesia, there’s a lack of transparency and potential risks associated with joining this body. While the country’s elite, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, claims that involvement with BoP aims at stabilization and reconstruction in Gaza, the public remains unsatisfied with the vague responses concerning Israel’s accountability for its actions in the region. Amnesty International asserts that by participating, Indonesia might unintentionally legitimize acts violating international law, as BoP may be perceived as a forum that excuses, rather than confronts, Israel’s actions.
