Indonesia Joins Trump 'Peace Council': The Importance of Maintaining Free and Active Principles

Indonesia has officially announced its participation in an international initiative to establish a ‘Peace Council’ proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. This news has sparked a range of reactions within the country, where leaders are trying to balance national interests with international commitments. Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Commission I, Dave Laksono, stated that the principle of free and active foreign policy must remain the backbone of Indonesia’s diplomacy. While the decision to join the ‘Peace Council’ demonstrates Indonesia’s commitment to peaceful international initiatives, it should not undermine its historically independent foreign policy. Laksono noted that Indonesia should also consider that many NATO countries are avoiding participation in this project and must act cautiously to avoid possible accusations of supporting unilateral U.S. actions. In light of this, Commission I of the House plans to implement enhanced oversight measures to ensure all actions are transparent, accountable, and in line with universal values, strengthening Indonesia’s international reputation.
