On January 8, 2026, in Geneva, Indonesia was officially elected as the President of the UN Human Rights Council for 2026 by the Asia-Pacific Group of countries. This appointment coincided with the 20th anniversary of the Council’s founding. In this role, Indonesia will undertake significant tasks and authorities. These include presiding over Council meetings, receiving and responding to correspondence from Permanent Missions and other members, and building awareness and trust in the Council through diplomacy.

According to the UN Human Rights Council, the President proposes candidates for special mandates, appoints experts to conduct investigations into alleged human rights violations, and ensures that the Council’s activities are conducted with dignity, constructively, and neutrally. Indonesia will oversee all Council meetings and processes in 2026, conducting them objectively and inclusively, while fostering trust and promoting interregional dialogue.

Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to executing its presidency impartially and transparently. Under the theme ‘A Presidency for All’, Indonesia aims to strengthen consensus and enhance the effectiveness of the Council’s work.

This is the first time Indonesia occupies the presidency of the Council, which was established in 2006.

This role highlights trust in Indonesia as an active and consistent participant in international human rights protection.
