Gema Bangsa Party Claims Regional Heads Should Be Elected by the People
In recent days, a heated debate has erupted in Indonesia’s political arena regarding the election of regional heads. The Gema Bangsa Party, particularly its Chairman Ahmad Rofiq, has voiced strong opposition to the idea of returning to a system where regional heads are elected through Regional Legislative Assemblies (DPRD). Rofiq emphasized that such a move would strip people of their voting rights in the democratic process and increase the influence of political elites. This statement emerged amidst discussions about legislative changes, which the Gema Bangsa Party believes contradict democratic principles. Many argue that direct elections ensure better accountability and transparency in regional governance, as well as prevent corrupt practices that could arise from elite-led elections. The debate continues, with many activists and civil society groups supporting the Gema Bangsa Party’s stance, advocating for the preservation of direct elections, considering them a more equitable and fair way to form government.
