Johns Hopkins Students Explore Indonesia's Political Economy at Metro TV
Recently, students from Johns Hopkins University visited Metro TV in Jakarta. Fifteen students and their leader, Professor Vikram Nehru, came to Indonesia to gain a deeper understanding of the role of media in the country’s politics and economy. This trip is part of their academic curriculum, and they planned to study how establishments like Metro TV affect the political landscape of the region. During the visit, the students were welcomed by Metro TV’s Director Arief Suditomo and other key company staff. The two-hour session covered a broad range of topics, including the media’s fight against violence, their economic influence, and significant issues such as corruption and education levels in Indonesia. Students also toured different parts of the media complex, including the newsroom and broadcast studios. This visit was part of their field study for the course ‘Demystifying Indonesia: The Political Economy of an Important Southeast Asian State’. Such practical experiences allow students to gain a deeper understanding of the interaction between media and politics in developing countries.
