Indonesia: Sustainable Tourism Development for Inclusive Economy

Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, recently reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustainable tourism development. Speaking at the ‘Leaders’ Meeting: Beyond Destinations-Reimagining Indonesia’s Tourism Future’ in Jakarta, she highlighted the importance of integrating tourism into a broader ecosystem that includes environmental, social, cultural, and economic aspects. Indonesia’s sustainable tourism aims not only to attract international visitors but also to ensure inclusive economic growth and the welfare of local communities.

Indonesia boasts numerous unique tourist sites, including 12 UNESCO Global Geoparks and numerous cultural heritage sites, which attract worldwide attention and support the growth of the tourism sector. Nationally, the government implements strategies aimed at improving tourist services and creating more equitable opportunities for all citizens.

As of the end of 2025, Indonesia recorded 13.98 million international tourists, generating $13.82 billion in foreign exchange revenues. Tourism has also created 25.91 million jobs, further emphasizing its importance in supporting the economy.

However, Indonesia faces significant challenges, including competition from other countries in the region, visa policy issues, and tourist infrastructure management. Improvements in these areas could significantly strengthen the country’s position in the global tourism arena.

The sustainable tourism program focuses on environmental protection, cultural preservation, and social welfare enhancement, ensuring that tourism benefits are distributed evenly.
