Mitsubishi Power Controls 25% of Indonesia's Power Plant Capacity

Mitsubishi Power Indonesia, part of a large Japanese conglomerate, has achieved remarkable success in the country’s energy sector by supplying approximately 19 GW, equivalent to 25% of Indonesia’s installed power capacity. The company’s advancement is grounded in cutting-edge decarbonization technology and eco-friendly energy solutions. Mitsubishi Power Indonesia’s President, Nobuhiro Kawai, explained that these achievements underscore the company’s strategic position in supporting Indonesia’s energy security and its transition towards a ‘net zero’ emission target by 2060.

Mitsubishi Power has been operating in Indonesia since 1971, and currently, around 25% of the country’s installed power plant capacity relies on their technology. Of the total installed capacity, 65% comprises coal-fired steam turbines, 35% gas turbines, and 5% geothermal turbines. Mitsubishi Power leads the national market for gas turbines with a 40% share, playing a pivotal role in supporting the sustainable integration of renewable energy sources.

Renewable sources like solar and wind power are inherently intermittent, underscoring the importance of creating a reliable energy foundation for their integration. Mitsubishi Power’s gas turbine technology allows for maintaining high firing temperatures up to 1,500 degrees Celsius, significantly enhancing reliability and performance. To ensure reliability, each unit undergoes rigorous testing for 1-2 years before delivery to customers. Kawai emphasized that this meticulous approach minimizes operational failure risks.

The company’s strategy focuses on long-term collaboration with local energy companies and government agencies to accelerate Indonesia’s transition to new sustainable technologies and energy solutions.
