Prabowo: Indonesia Needs 140,000 More Doctors

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced at the UK–Indonesia Education Roundtable in London that the country faces a shortage of 140,000 doctors. He invited British universities to establish campuses in Indonesia to enhance medical education. Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia currently produces only about 9,000 doctors annually, insufficient to meet the needs. He also proposed the construction of teaching hospitals with international standards on these campuses. Prabowo expressed hope that this initiative would significantly improve the quality of healthcare services in Indonesia and reduce the country’s healthcare expenditures abroad, potentially saving up to 6 billion dollars annually. He also stated that Indonesia would welcome foreign lecturers, which would benefit the development of education and healthcare.
