Why John Herdman Accepted the Offer to Coach Indonesia's National Team
John Herdman, known for his achievements in Canada, recently accepted the role of head coach for Indonesia’s national football team. The primary reason for his decision is the local talents, which he considers to have immense potential. According to an interview with Canadian Press, Herdman emphasized the importance of embracing the spirit and intensity found in Indonesia.
He also noted that the project proposed by PSSI impressed him with its vision and ambitions. John, who previously coached Toronto FC, sees opportunities in Indonesia to utilize his World Cup qualification experience.
John also pointed out cultural similarities between Indonesia and Canada, especially concerning dual-citizenship players. This strategy opens new opportunities for enhancing the national team’s level.
PSSI highlighted Herdman’s willingness to live in Indonesia so he can consistently monitor local talents and immerse himself in the country’s cultural context. According to John, immersing himself in the local culture and understanding the people is a crucial part of his work method.
Herdman is expected to fly to Jakarta on January 11 or 12, 2025, for a formal introduction to his new role and to begin working with the team.
