Amnesty: New Code Authorizes Repression and Human Rights Violations
With the enactment of the new Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP) and Penal Code (KUHP) in Indonesia, concerns are mounting about the potential deterioration of human rights conditions in the country. Amnesty International and other human rights organizations have expressed serious concerns that these new laws could serve as tools for state repression and human rights violations. The organization claims that the new laws expand law enforcement powers at the expense of civil liberties and can be used to suppress dissent and limit freedom of expression. The introduction of these regulations has attracted criticism not only within the country but has also caught the attention of international observers and organizations urging a review of the legislation. The crucial issue is how these laws will be applied and what safeguards will be provided to protect citizens’ rights.
