Pushing for Technological Independence, Indonesia to Accelerate National Chip Industry Development

Indonesia is making decisive moves to strengthen its technological independence through investments in the semiconductor industry. At a recent limited meeting in Hambalang, President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the importance of building a chip industry as the foundation for the country’s high-tech future. Sectors like automotive and electronics will heavily rely on the availability of these components, especially in the context of electric vehicles and smart digital devices. Indonesia has significant potential due to its large reserves of quartz sand, which can be processed into silicon, the main material for chips, directly in the country. Additionally, the United States has shown interest in collaborating to develop a semiconductor ecosystem in Indonesia. Despite the rich natural resources, the main challenges remain limited human resources and technological infrastructure. Currently, the government is focusing on creating a conducive ecosystem to unlock the full potential of the semiconductor industry.
