Only 17% of Indonesian Women Work in the Tech Sector

Despite Indonesia’s fast-paced progression towards a digital economy, the participation of women in the tech industry remains minimal, with only 17% of women currently working in this field. The government, through the Ministry of Communications and Digital Technologies (Kemkomdigi), is actively working to ensure women have equal opportunities in accessing knowledge and career advancement in technology. Minister of Communication and Digital Technologies Meutya Hafid highlights that increasing the participation of women in science and technology is not only a gender equality issue but also crucial for strengthening the country’s digital economy. It is projected that Indonesia will need around 12 million digital talents by 2030, with a current shortfall of about three million. Meutya Hafid stated that addressing this issue will require wider and more equitable access to educational and career opportunities for women. She emphasized the need to tackle the ‘leaky pipeline’ phenomenon, where women leave the tech industry. The AWS Girls’ Tech Day program recently held in Bekasi addresses this issue by providing numerous learning and practical skill application opportunities in AI, coding, and robotics for 400 female students.
