PDIP Rejects Elections of Regional Leaders via DPRD

January 11, 2026
1 min read

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) has confirmed its firm rejection of the proposal to elect regional leaders through the Regional Representative Councils (DPRD). On Friday, January 9, 2025, PDIP DPP Chairman Andreas Hugo Pareira stated that the party’s stance remains unchanged despite pressure from other parties. According to him, PDIP is prepared to stand alone in its decision. PDIP has always supported direct elections, believing it strengthens democracy and public support. In the upcoming National Working Meeting, the party plans to further discuss the issue, bringing in experts and community leaders for opinions and recommendations. This position elevates PDIP in the public eye as defenders of democratic processes. The impact of the new election process through DPRD could undermine public trust in the party system, but PDIP stands for reform and open discussion. PDIP hopes that even under pressure, they can demonstrate transparency and commitment to the will of the people.
