Toll Krapyak Tragedy: A Warning Before Holidays
A tragic accident involving a Cahaya Trans bus occurred on the Krapyak toll road in Semarang, resulting in the death of 16 people. This incident is a stark reminder of the need to enhance transport safety, especially ahead of Indonesia’s festive holiday periods like Christmas and New Year, when the movement of citizens is expected to be particularly high.
Vice Chairman of the Indonesian Parliament’s Commission V, Saiful Huda, described the tragedy as an ‘early warning’ that cannot be overlooked. He noted that during the holiday period, road activity will be significantly intensified, with an estimated 119.5 million people traveling across the country.
Huda urged the Ministry of Transportation and all stakeholders to implement comprehensive safety measures across all modes of transport. He particularly stressed the necessity of rigorous safety inspections (ramp check) for all buses to ensure unfit vehicles are not in operation.
Huda also calls for mandatory health checks for drivers and strict monitoring of their working hours to prevent fatigue. Key attention should be paid to intersections, congested routes, and tourist areas, especially in Java, which sees the majority of travel movement.
The Krapyak toll road incident serves as a reminder that the safety of millions of citizens is a responsibility that the state must uphold. Taking precautionary actions can help prevent the transformation of festive joy into tragedy.
