Boosting Oil Extraction: Government to Reactivate 6,305 Old Wells
February 16, 2026

The Indonesian government is actively working to increase oil production. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced plans to reactivate 6,305 idle wells containing potential hydrocarbon reserves. This strategy provides a faster way to boost production compared to opening new fields. By 2025, oil production had already reached 605,300 barrels per day, exceeding forecasts. The application of advanced technologies such as Enhanced Oil Recovery and hydraulic fracturing will optimize remaining reserves. However, these actions require significant investment, so the government is offering flexibility in contract schemes for contractors.
