January 2, 2026

In Jakarta, a coalition of civil society declared Indonesia in a state of legal emergency due to the enactment of the new Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP), effective January 2, 2026. At a press conference, a coalition representative stated that the new legislation is a ‘crime against humanity.’ The organization claims that the law’s text was provided to the public just two days before it took effect, making it highly dangerous for citizens. The coalition calls on President Prabowo Subianto to urgently issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to suspend and comprehensively review the law with public participation.
