Remembering Dede Sulaeman: A Legend of Indonesian Football

Dede Sulaeman, a legendary forward in Indonesian football, passed away on January 25, 2026, at the age of 69, leaving behind a memorable legacy in the sports world. During his career, spanning from the 1970s to the 1980s, Sulaeman became an emblematic figure on the field, known for his agility and sharp shooting. Born on May 8, 1956, in Jakarta, Sulaeman quickly showcased his football abilities, starting his career with the youth team Persija Junior. Dede’s professional career kicked off with Persija Jakarta, where he gained fame by helping the team win the Soeratin Cup in 1974. Later, he joined Indonesia Muda, continuing his illustrious career until 1985. Playing for the Indonesian national team from 1978 to 1985, Sulaeman was a key player in crucial matches. One of the highlights of his career was participating in the qualifiers for the 1986 World Cup. Although Indonesia did not make it to the World Cup, Sulaeman’s performances on the international stage were memorable. Sulaeman’s famous nickname ‘sharp blade’ reflected his playing style—fast movements and a focus on precise attack completion. In the 1982-83 season, he became the top scorer in Galatama, scoring 17 goals and cementing his status as an elite forward. After his football career ended, Dede Sulaeman chose a calmer life, dedicating himself to working at Pertamina. Despite stepping away from active football, Sulaeman remained close to the sport, inspiring the new generation of players with his example. His passing is a significant loss for the entire Indonesian football community. Dede Sulaeman will always be remembered as a great player devoted to developing football in Indonesia.
