Imlek National Reflects Cultural Acculturation in Indonesia

Imlek is more than just a celebration. In Indonesia, it represents an ancient process of cultural acculturation that integrates diverse traditions and customs, including influences from China, India, the Middle East, and Europe. In 2026, Imlek is celebrated nationally as a symbol of cultural openness and national unity. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon explains that this festival is not only a holiday but also a cultural event bringing together Indonesians in their diversity. This year marks the first Imlek Festival from February 17 to March 3 in Jakarta, themed ‘Harmoni Nusantara’ (Harmony of Nusantara). The celebrations include a barongsai parade and martial arts performances, exemplifying the symbolic merging of traditions. It is noteworthy that the events occur not only in Jakarta but also in cities like Singkawang, Palembang, Solo, and others, emphasizing the scale and significance of Imlek in contemporary Indonesia.
