Minister of Energy: Without Industrialization, Resource-Rich Countries Won't Develop

Jakarta — Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, emphasized that no developing country rich in natural resources can become developed without embracing industrialization and comprehensive resource processing. Speaking at the ‘Indonesia Economic Outlook 2026’, he highlighted the importance of adding value within the country for sustainable economic growth. Historical evidence suggests that relying solely on raw material exports hinders long-term economic progress. Lahadalia pointed out that the 2024 ban on raw nickel exports drastically boosted national income, enhancing employment and economic growth. He further noted that some countries may prefer to keep Indonesia from becoming a major economic force and hence oppose its industrialization policies.
